Every year, hundreds of Australia’s fastest and strongest sportsmen and women are heading overseas after being headhunted by American universities.
In basketball alone, there are currently about 300 Australians in the United States on scholarships.
Athletics Australia estimates 60 Australian track and field athletes have joined the exodus.
The head coach of Athletics Australia, Craig Hilliard, said the statistics were surprising.
“They recruit hard, the coaches of the college system,” he said.
“That’s their job, to go and recruit and get a wide cross-section of athletes across a number of events.”
